Smartphone maker Vivo hasn't updated their X series since they launched the Vivo X21 over two years ago. It was India's first smartphone to have sport a fingerprint scanner in-display. The company has now released two new smartphones, the Vivo X50 and the X50 Pro, in this range. The Vivo X50 Pro is the highlight here, since it packs OIS and EIS in a gimbal camera and claims to provide Great stabilisation. We've had to spend some time with the Vivo X50 Pro and here's our first system impressions.
The message is straightforward with the Vivo X50 Pro: it's a camera-focused smartphone bringing a new gimbal camera device to market. Although most smartphones rely on OIS and/or EIS to stabilize video, a gimbal is also used by the Vivo X50 Pro, meaning that the sensor moves physically to compensate for shakes. The camera tech appears to be impressive, but that's not all, the Vivo X50 Pro sports a 90Hz display and is also powered by the Qualcomm 765 G SoC.
Let's just begin with the design. The display curves to the sides where the frame meets. The rear glass panel also curves into the frame, gives this phone a premium look and makes it easy to hold. Vivo is shipping the X50 Pro over an Alpha Grey finish. Vivo opted for front and rear Schott Xensation UP glass. The frosted rear panel manages to hide quite a bit of fingerprints and smudges
The Vivo X50 Pro has a 6.56-inch AMOLED display with a hole at the top left corner for the selfie camera which is not very distracting. I like Vivo keeping the bezels thin and this gives the impression of an edge-to - edge display, especially on the sides. This panel has a refresh rate of 90Hz which has made the UI feel smooth while scrolling through the various menus. It also has a conveniently placed, in-display fingerprint scanner. The display is getting quite bright and has very good viewing angles. When I revise this device, I'll report more of my findings.
The X50 Pro frame is thin, and on the right are the power and the volume buttons. Where these buttons are positioned, there is a slight recess, and they have good feedback, which makes them easy to hit simply by feeling. The phone's top and bottom are absolutely flat.
It has an in-bottom USB Type-C port along with a bottom-firing speaker and a SIM tray. This system does not have a 3.5 mm headphone port, but the company is offering a USB Type-C to 3.5 mm adaptor and an in-ear headset in the package. The Vivo X50 Pro has two Nano-SIM slots and is a dual-SIM product.
Vivo has selected the Qualcomm 765 G SoC to power the Vivo X50 Pro. This processor is capable of 5 G networking and will drive the coming OnePlus Nord as well. The X50 Pro is India's first smartphone to have the Qualcomm Snapdragon 765 G 5 G SoC and I'm curious to see how it compares with other processors. It has 8 GB RAM and only 256 GB of dataIn India the software was introduced. I've got the top-end model with me. Space is non-expandable but as Vivo provides sufficient space, I don't see this as an problem.
The Vivo X50 Pro houses its tiny frame with a 4315mAh battery and weighs just 181.5 g. It also comes in the box with a 33W FlashCharge 2.0 adapter that will help to charge the battery at a rapid rate. The Vivo X50 Pro is running FunTouchOS 10.5 on top of Android 10 and was running the appropriate May Security patch.
I saved the best for the last, and that's the Vivo X50 Pro quad-camera setup. A modified 48-megapixel Sony IMX598 main sensor mounted in the new gimbal system is the highlight of this setup. This allows the lens to shift around and the sensor to compensate for shakes.Vivo says this will help not only for video but also for handheld low-light stills. I found this to be very interesting, and will fully test it in my review.
Accompanying the primary sensor is a super-wide-angle 8-megapixel camera which can also handle macros up to 2.5 cm. There's a 13-megapixel depth sensor for portraits with an f/2.48 aperture, and an 8-megapixel sensor. The camera module is slightly protruding at the back and Vivo has been using a two-step method. In the first step the telephoto camera sits while the other three are raised a little further. The main camera looks larger than the others, visually. Vivo also appears to have introduced quite a few new features to the X50 Pro camera app, which I will be reviewing in full detail.
The Vivo X50 Pro was priced at Rs. 49,990 for a single setup with 8 GB of RAM and 256 GB of storage
